"Now that I look back on all the years, I know that things had to end the way they did. I had never been really close to Jay Gatsby, but somehow he has always affected my life. Through Daisy Fay I met Gatsby for the first time in 1917. At that time they had been dating each other, and I admired Daisy for being that gorgeous, popular woman who was drifting through her life. Unfortunately Gatsby had been sent overseas as a soldier a few months later. Im positive that getting separated from him was hard for her, for she went to New York to say good-bye to him. Although it seemed like a tragedy, she got over him soon by marrying Tom Buchanan. But even though she decided to marry Tom, there had been times when I believed her heart was still set on Gatsby.
A few years later I went to some of Gatsbys parties without even realizing that it was the same man. At that time many rumours were being told about him. Nobody really knew where all his money came from. Some people believed that he had been a German spy, others that he had been an Oxford man. Through Nick Carraway, Gatsbys neighbour and good friend, I got to know Gatsby better at one of his glamorous parties. By now I know that Gatsby only bought the house in West Egg so that Daisy would be just across the bay. And the only reason for throwing these huge parties was to impress Daisy and attract her to come. Somehow he figured out that I had been close to Daisy, and therefore he started a conversation with me. His plan was to meet Daisy again at Nicks house, neutral ground. My role was to convince Nick to invite her over and arrange a meeting between those two.
After this meeting had taken place I realized that old feelings got enflamed. Daisy and Gatsby started seeing each other more often and tried to keep their relationship a secret. Time flew by and after a while Tom also got confronted with Gatsby. Tom got suspicious and made an investigation about this fellow. I still can remember that day we all met at the Buchanans house for lunch. The party consisted of Nick Carraway, who had been my boyfriend at that time, Daisy and Tom Buchanan, Jay Gatsby and me. It had been such a hot summer day that we all decided to take a trip to New York. Daisy and Gatsby could not conceal their love for one another anymore, and Tom had seen it. His suspicions had also been confirmed when Gatsby and Daisy ended up taking off separately in the Buchanans blue coupé. Tom had realized more and more what was going on with his wife. I think at that time something had changed Toms behaviour and he started fighting for Daisys love. Now at the hotel room, when feelings had been at their highest, the whole confrontation took place. The more Tom and Gatsby had been fighting, the more we got to know the truth. Although there had always been gossip around Gatsby, I was more than stunned when I found out about his illegal business. Gatsbys drug-store turned out to be a bootlegging operation. In the beginning Daisy had tried to support Gatsby up to this point, but now we could all feel Daisy slipping slowly back to her husband. In the end it was clear that Gatsby had lost Daisy.
But things even got worse on our way home. As we passed Wilsons garage we got stuck in the traffic and noticed crowds of people and police cars standing around. Someone apparently had been struck by a car coming from New York. We found out that this victim had been Myrtle Wilson, Toms mistress at that time. The death car, as the newspapers called it, did not stop. They searched for a yellow car - Gatsbys car.
From this point on I dont really know all about what took place afterwards. I guess George Wilson wanted to take revenge on the man who had killed his wife. But not only Gatsbys dead body had been found in the pool, George Wilson had also killed himself and was lying nearby on the grass.
I had read about this incident in the newspaper. Nick and I had not been together anymore, so I do not really have much information about Gatsbys death. As much as I know Nick had been one of the very few people attending the funeral. Although Gatsby used to throw lots of magnificent parties, he did not seem to have a lot of friends. When I look back on everything that had happened back then, I can say that Gatsbys whole life was just built upon his dream embodied by Daisy. She was all he had ever wanted. Gatsby had lived in a world full of lies and illusions. I dont really know what to think of Gatsby, as to me, he still remains a mystery and my thoughts often go back to the time when we all used to hang out together.
Tom and Daisy moved away, and I have never heard from either of them ever since. Nick also returned to the Midwest to start a new life. As for myself, I continued to move on and still played golf for a few more years until I retired. Today I am working as a freelance journalist for a few magazines.
