Die festgefahrene Existenz einfach hinter sich zu lassen und noch einmal ganz neu anzufangen, das ist zwar ein verführerischer Gedanke, aber die meisten von uns gestatten ihn sich nur als Sekundentagtraum. Nicht so Tomas (Frank Vercruyssen). Der Zufall spielt dem Mann in der Midlife-Crisis, den sein Bart juckt und der nur darauf wartet, dass seine schöne Frau Sara (Sara De Roo) ihn verlässt, einen fremden Pass in die Hände. Tomas täuscht den eigenen Tod vor und setzt sich auf eine exotische Insel ab. Nur muss er bald feststellen, dass er auch als Wiedergeborener keineswegs sein Paradies gefunden hat. Fünf Jahre später wird er zurückkehren – und nicht nur das eigene Leben noch einmal auf den Kopf stellen. Diese doppelbödige Exkursion der Belgierin Patrice Toye, deren Identitätsspiel von fern an Michelangelo Antonionis „Beruf: Reporter“ erinnert, wirft nicht ohne lakonischen Humor eine Reihe philosophischer Fragen auf. Was es zum Glücklichsein braucht, ob den Protagonisten die Durchschnittlichkeit seines Lebens quält, oder die Vorstellung, wie aufregend es hätte sein können? Wie sangen noch die Beatles: He’s a real nowhere man, sitting in his nowhere land, making all his nowhere plans for nobody.

Simply leaving a stalled existence behind and starting over fresh is a tempting thought, but for most of us it is never more than a momentary contemplation. Not for Tomas (Frank Vercruyssen). Chance gives the man languishing in a mid-life crisis, whose beard itches and who is just waiting for his wife Sara (Sara De Roo) to leave him, a new lease on life via someone else’s passport. Tomas fakes his own death and travels to an exotic island. Only he soon realizes that even as a “reborn” person, he hasn’t found paradise. Five years later, he returns – and turns more than just his own life upside down. The role of identity in the film is vaguely reminiscent of Michelangelo Antonionis’ “The Passenger”. This ambiguous excursion from Belgian filmmaker Patrice Toye poses a number of philosophical questions with laconic humor: What does a person need for happiness? Is the protagonist agonized by the mediocrity of his life or his vision of how exciting his life could have been? How did the Beatles put it: He’s a real nowhere man, sitting in his nowhere land, making all his nowhere plans for nobody.

Geb. 1967. 1990 Abschluss des Filmstudiums am St. Lucas Institute in Brüssel, danach diverse Kurzfilme, Dokumentationen und TV-Beiträge. Ihr Spielfilmdebüt „Rosie“ gewann 1998 zahlreiche internationale Preise. Das Drehbuch zu ihrem zweiten Kinofilm „Nowhere Man“ wurde bereits im Vorfeld mit dem NHK International Filmmakers Prize beim Sundance Filmfestival ausgezeichnet und wurde von Wim Wenders persönlich protegiert.

Born in 1967, Toye completed her film degree at St. Lucas Institute in Brussels in 1990. She followed this up with a wide-ranging palette of short films, documentaries and TV programs. Her feature film debut “Rosie” won numerous international awards in 1998. The script for her second feature film, “Nowhere Man”, was already awarded the NHK International Filmmakers Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and was personally sponsored by Wim Wenders.
