Mariekens Freund trennt sich von ihr. Sie ist verzweifelt, will sprechen. Aber niemand hat Zeit. Dann wird sie in ihrer Amsterdamer Wohnung überfallen, beinahe umgebracht, kann sich gerade noch retten. Marieken benötigt Abstand, zieht in ein schwer renovierungsbedürftiges Landhäuschen, verkriecht sich, sucht Ablenkung in Renovierungsarbeiten und im Chatroom. Ihr Nachbar klingelt, stellt sich vor und bietet ihr Unterstützung an. Marieken nimmt an. Doch dann wird es ihr zu viel. Sie öffnet ihm nicht mehr, versteckt sich vor ihm. Zu tief sind die Wunden der Trennung und des Mordversuches. Der Zuschauer sieht das komplette Gefühlschaos aus nächster Nähe. Und ist doch weit weg – kann ihr nicht nahe kommen, kann nicht trösten – zu tief ist Mariekens Schneckenhaus. Ein extremer Film, der behutsam und radikal zugleich das Psychogramm einer jungen Frau nachzeichnet, die aus der Bahn geworfen wird und verzweifelt versucht, das Trauma zu verarbeiten, und der durch tiefe Einblicke in die Gefühlswelt ergreift.

Marieken’s boyfriend splits up with her. She is despairing and needs to talk but nobody has the time to listen. Then she is attacked in her Amsterdam apartment, almost killed and barely manages to survive. She needs to get away from it all and so she moves into a house in the country in need of major renovation and retreats from the world, seeking to distract herself with renovation work and internet chat rooms. One day, her neighbor rings her doorbell, introduces himself and offers his help, which she accepts. But then it all becomes too much for her. She no longer opens her door to him but instead hides from him. The wounds she has from the breakup and the attempt on her life are too deep. The audience sees Marieken’s utter emotional chaos up close and yet is far away and cannot get close to her or console her – so high is the wall of hopelessness around her. With deep insights, this extreme film reaches into the world of emotions by carefully yet radically tracing the psychogram of a young woman whose life is turned upside down and is desperately trying to process the trauma she has experienced.

Esther Rots
Geb. 1972 in Groenlo. Nach dem Studium an der Academy of Visual Arts in Arnheim nahm sie 1994 ein Filmstudium an der Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie in Amsterdam auf. Zusammen mit ihrem Bruder Hugo hat sie die Produktionsfirma Rots Filmwerk BV in Amsterdam gegründet. Nach drei Kurzfilmen ist „Kan Door Huid Heen“ ihr erster langer Spielfilm.

Born in Groenlo in 1972, Rots went on to study film at the Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie in Amsterdam after studying at the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnheim. Together with her brother Hugo she founded the production company Rots Filmwerk BV in Amsterdam. After producing three short films, “Kan Door Huid Heen” is her first feature-length production.
