Es ist ein einfaches Experiment: Das Mädchen soll vor der versammelten Klasse entscheiden, welche von zwei Linien auf einer Schautafel die längere ist. Eine offensichtliche Sache. Aber nachdem ihre Mitschüler mehrfach höhnisch darauf beharrt haben, dass sie sich irre, knickt sie schließlich ein – und wählt die kürzere. So funktioniert Gruppendruck. Von Menschen in der Gemeinschaft handelt der schwedische Episodenfilm „Involuntary“, und meist stehen die Figuren in den fünf parallel geführten Handlungssträngen dabei vor ganz grundsätzlichen moralischen Dilemmata: mitmachen oder sich verweigern, reden oder schweigen? Regisseur Ruben Östlund erzählt unter anderem von einem Jubilar, der sich auf seiner Geburtstagsfeier mit einer Feuerwerksrakete schwer verletzt, aber die Gäste nicht mit seinem Zustand behelligen will. Von einer Gruppe pubertierender Mädchen, die auf betrunkener Tour durch die Stadt bedenklich mit ihrem Lolita-Appeal kokettieren. Von einem Busfahrer, der seine Fahrgäste in eine Art Geiselhaft nimmt, weil einer von ihnen Schaden auf der Toilette angerichtet haben soll. In eindringlichen Plansequenzen mit oft improvisiert wirkenden Dialogen spürt diese Tragikomödie der Eigendynamik des Zusammenhangs nach.

It is a simple experiment: The girl has to decide which of the two lines on the blackboard is longer in front of her class. A simple enough task. But as her fellow students mockingly insist that she is about to choose the wrong one, she finally caves in – and chooses the shorter one. That’s how peer pressure works. The Swedish episodic film “Involuntary” deals with people in the community and generally the figures in the five parallel plot lines face very basic moral dilemmas: Go along with the group or refuse, speak or say nothing? Director Ruben Östlund tells stories such as that of a man who is badly hurt by a firework while celebrating his birthday, but doesn’t want to bother the guests with his injury. Östlund also shows a group of pubescent girls off on a drunken tour through the city as they flirt dangerously – using their Lolita appeal. Another strand follows a bus driver who takes his passengers captive because one of them is accused of having damaged the toilet. With striking planned sequences and often seemingly improvised dialogue, this tragicomedy traces the momentum of cause and effect.

Geb. 1974 auf Styrsö, einer kleinen Insel vor der Westküste Schwedens. 1998 Aufnahme des Film- und Fotografiestudiums an der Universität von Göteborg. Sein erster Spielfilm „The Guitar Mongoloid“ gewann 2005 den Fipresci Preis beim Filmfestival in Moskau. 2006 wurde sein Kurzfilm „ Autobiographical Scene Number 6882“ beim Filmfestival in Edinburgh mit dem Prix UIP ausgezeichnet. Sein zweiter Spielfilm „De Ofrivilliga“ wurde 2008 für die Reihe „Un certain regard“ beim Filmfestival in Cannes ausgewählt.

Born on Styrsö, a small island off the west coast of Sweden, in 1974. In 1998, he started studying film and photography at the University of Göteborg. In 2005, his first feature film “The Guitar Mongoloid” was awarded the Fipresci prize at the film festival in Moscow. In 2006, his short film “Autobiographical Scene Number 6882” won the UIP Award in Edinburgh. His second feature “Involuntary” was selected for the section “Un certain regard” at the film festival in Cannes in 2008.
