„Ich habe noch nie einen Bollywoodfilm gesehen, aber ich hörte, sie seien toll“, bekennt der junge holländische Schauspieler Nick (Egbert Jan Weeber) in seiner Bewerbung für den Dreh im fernen Indien. Das Rezept für einen echten Bollywood-Hit ist dabei ziemlich simpel, wie Nick schon kurz nach der Ankunft in Mumbai von seinem Fahrer hört: Eine handvoll Action, ein bisschen Tanz und Musik, eine Prise Moral, und nicht zuletzt Regen – der symbolisiert die Liebe und den Kuss, der nicht gezeigt werden darf. Allerdings ist der fremde Westler weniger von den opulenten Sets der Traumfabrik fasziniert, sondern fühlt sich jenseits der Kulissen bald zu den Ärmsten der Gesellschaft hingezogen. Bewaffnet mit der Super-8-Kamera seines senilen Vaters, dem er regelmäßig Videobotschaften wider das Vergessen sendet, durchstreift er die Slums der Millionenmetropole und macht die Hilfsbedürftigen im Sucher aus. Doch nicht jede Hilfe ist willkommen.
Der niederländische Regisseur und Autor Diederik van Rooijen hat hier ein kraftvolles, magisch-realistisches Drama geschaffen, das auf tatsächlichen Erlebnissen des Schauspielers Egbert Jan Weeber basiert und auf mehreren Ebenen Fragen nach den Konsequenzen unseres Handelns im Global Village aufwirft.

“I’ve never seen a Bollywood film, but I’ve heard that they’re great”, confesses the young Dutch actor Nick (Egbert Jan Weeber) in his application for a film in far-flung India. The recipe for a true Bollywood hit is actually quite simple, as Nick quickly learns from his driver shortly after arriving in Mumbai: Some action, a sprinkling of dancing and music, a touch of morals, and last but not least rain – this symbolizes love and the kiss which is not allowed to be shown. However, the young westerner is less fascinated by the opulent sets of the Indian ‘dream factory’, and is instead soon drawn away from the shoot towards the poorest people on the subcontinent. Armed with the Super-8 camera which belongs to his senile father, who he regularly sends video messages as mementos, he wanders the slums of the metropolis and looks through the lens for people who need help. But not all help is welcome. The Dutch director and author Diederik van Rooijen has created this powerful drama which fuses magic and reality. It is based on the actual experiences of the actor Egbert Jan Weeber and poses questions on several levels about the consequences of our behavior in the global village.

Geb. 1975, aufgewachsen in den Niederlanden, Griechenland und den USA. Studium an der Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie in Amsterdam. Seitdem Regiearbeiten für Kino, TV und Werbung. Viele seiner Kurzfilme und Spots wurden mehrfach preisgekrönt. Sein Kurzfilm „Babyphoned“ wurde 2002 auf dem Nederlands Film Festival in Utrecht als bester Kurzfilm prämiert, sein Spot für Volkswagen gewann 2006 den Bronzenen Löwen in Cannes und „Dummy“ wurde 2007 in der Kategorie „Live Action Short“ für den Oscar vorgeschlagen.

Born in 1975, he grew up in the Netherlands, Greece and the USA. Studied at the Dutch Film and Television Academy in Amsterdam. Since then he has directed films, TV and advertising. Many of his short films and spots have won multiple awards. His short film “Babyphoned” was crowned best short film at the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht, his ad for Volkswagen won the bronze lion in Cannes in 2006 and “Dummy” was nominated for an Oscar in the “Live Action Short” category in 2007.
